Nation’s Largest Trade Group Sees 100th

This month the National Association of Realtors reaches its 100th birthday.  Originally called the National Association of Real estate Exchanges when it began in Chicago in May of 1908, the association has now grown into the nation’s largest trade group with more than 1.2 million members.

The NAR will celebrate the centennial milestone during its midyear meeting and trade expo going on May 12th-17th in Washington D.C.

NAR has made great strides over the years in promoting private property rights, disclosure laws and establishing home ownership as a cornerstone of the American Dream.

In the beginning, 100 years ago, 120 men gathered at a YMCA in Chicago with the goal to unite the real estate men of America and turn the fledgling real estate business into a profession.  It is  obvious that goal has been reached.  To further the goal of professionalism, NAR created the Code of Ethics, a comprehensive document with 17 articles.   The Code of Ethics is a promise—as a customer of a Realtor, you can expect honest and ethical treatment in all transaction-related matters. It is mandatory for Realtors to take the Code of Ethics orientation and they are also required to complete a refresher course every four years.  Not all licensed real estate agents can call themselves Realtors.  Only members of the National Assn of Realtors are allowed to be called a Realtor.  Every Realtor makes a commitment to adhere to the Code of Ethics, which is based on professionalism and protection of the public.  Realtors are expected to maintain a higher level of knowledge of the process of buying and selling real estate.

Next time when buying or selling real estate be sure you are dealing with a Realtor.  And hey, wish ‘em Happy Birthday.
